MOM N ME 2003

The Dino-mite good time of the 2003 Mom and Me is right around the corner in May.  The first weekend is May 10 – 11 (Mother’s Day weekend) and the second weekend is May 17 – 18.  Every Cub Scout and mom (or a adult female leader) is invited to attend.  This year’s theme is Jurassic Park.  You can leave gigantic footprints in the mud pit, swim like a prehistoric fish in the swimming pool, or paddle around in a canoe looking for fossils.  The challenge course and climbing wall will be open so the little T-Rexes can practice their skills for growing up into big T-Rexes.  The other dinosaurs can defend their territory at the archery and BB shooting events.

All this fun and a patch for just $18.00 per person and t-shirts are available for $10.00; but you have preorder and prepay by May 1st.   This is very important because extra t-shirts will not be available.  Supper and breakfast will be served both weekends in the cave-like dining hall.   You can register with your pack or as an individual.  Don’t wait because dinosaurs are big and they can fill up Camp Sol Mayer real fast.  For more information you can call the scout office at 1-800-321-7107 or 325-655-7107.

2003 Summer Camp

The Concho Valley Council will hold its’ summer camp at Camp Sol Mayer this year.  Staff Week will start the first week of June; session 1 will be June 8-14, session 2 – June 15-21 and session 3 – June 22-28.  There have been several merit badges added to the program for this year to include American Cultures, Farm Mechanics, Auto Mechanics, Journalism, Fly Fishing, and Archaeology.  This is in addition to the many choices listed in the Leaders Guide which is available on our webpage.  Just go to cvcbsa.com and look around.  We are planning on a truly unique time this summer with our Indian Village, Mountain Man Encampment, our 60 foot rappelling tower, and yes we are even bringing back the RAGE program.  The RAGE  program is meant for the Scout at least 14 years old that has finished at least First Class and needs more of a challenge.  Even with all these programs being added the cost is still only $135 per Scout for the base camp and $185 for the RAGE program.  Scoutmasters will have plenty to do as well with classes on Safe Swim Defense, Safety Afloat, Youth Protection, Program Preview, and daily events that will challenge seasoned Scouters as well as first time Leaders. The Caveman Golf is back for another round, Scoutmaster canoe woodcarving competition, as well as the Cool Hand Luke (hard boiled egg eating) contest. Matt Vercher is the Camp Director for 2003.  Michael Mitchell  will be the Program Director, and Nicky Martinez is the Business Manager as well as operating Trader Nic’s.  There are still excellent campsites available but they are going fast.  Make your reservations today by contacting the Council Service Center at (325) 655-7107 or toll free at (800) 321-7107.

REPORT FROM CAMP

CAMP SOL MAYER is green this time of the year.  We have received much rain and our grass is growing.  A program to eradicate the mesquite on camp is underway and the camp is about 50% cleared.  We have open the campsites and cleared the river edge to the Western fence line.  We have a new Trading Post located just South of the Office.  This free stand structure will feature 12’ porches around the building as well as restrooms when completed.  It will be open for Summer Camp.  Several improvements to the Rifle and Shotgun ranges are being made with the funding coming from a grant from the NRA. Summer Camp and the RAGE will be conducted at Camp Sol Mayer for 2003.

CAMP FAWCETT is now available for troop and pack  camping.  The water system and latrines will be closed until April 1, 2003.  We are looking for someone to assist us in grading all the camp roads.

ORDER OF THE ARROW

The Spring OA Ordeal is set for April 25-27 at Camp Sol Mayer.  There will also be a camp-wide workday Saturday, April 26th in order to prepare for the 2003 summer camp season.

This will be the last chance for an OA candidate to complete his ordeal this year so any Scouts who were called out during 2002 need to plan to attend.  Ordeal members who have been active for at least 10 months are encouraged to attend and take the test to become a Brotherhood member.

We are still forming Dance Teams as well as Drumming teams so if you like to learn more then plan on attending the Chapter meetings and we will fill you in.

If you are not receiving OA Newsletters then you need to call the Council Office to make sure that your 2003 dues are current.  Any questions concerning the OA can be directed to Jerry White, Lodge Advisor at 325 944-1514.

CUB RESIDENT CAMP

Strap on your six-shooters because the WILD WILD WEST has taken over Camp Sol Mayer.  The Wolf s and Bears get to stir up trouble June 1-3 and the Webelos get to finish it off June 5-8.  The cub scouts can be anyone of their favorite characters from the old west this summer.  Target practice for the Texas Rangers will be available at the archery and BB range.  The Indians are going to be swimming in the swimmin’ hole and boating on the ragin’ river.  While they are resting they can find the old arrowheads the Native Americans left lying around.  The cowboys are going to testing their pioneer skills while out on the hiking trails.  The town folk are going to enjoy their fiesta on the river while fishing.

Wolf and Bear Cubs (boys who will be in the 2nd or 3rd grade next school year) can attend the 3-day/2-night camp for $65.00 and the Webelos (4th or 5th grade next school year) can come for $85.00 for a 4-day/3-night camp.  Adults can come for $35.00.  The fees include a t-shirt and patch for the cubs and grub for both adults and cubs.  Don’t miss the taming of that Wild West Texas town of Camp Sol Mayer, register as a pack or as an individual by May 1st with a deposit of $20.00.  If you register at camp there will be a $15.00 late fine.  For more information or to get brochures call the scout sheriff’s office at 1-800-321-7107 or 325-655-7107.
