CHANGES AROUND THE  CONCHO VALLEY COUNCIL

We have seen a lot of changes around the Concho Valley Council in the last several months. Personnel changes, camping changes, new program features. Even the name of the newsletter has changed.  All of these changes are meant to be in the best interest of everyone in the council. There are still more changes to come.

Recently a marketing consultant volunteered some time to the council to help develop a marketing plan to help the council spread the good news of Scouting. Since marketing involves just about everything we say or do from how we answer the phone to the way we communicate with volunteers or to the media, we asked this consultant to take a good look at our council and tell us where we could do better.

You may have noticed some changes already, like the title of District Executive changing to Unit Serving Executive. This one makes

sense, after all what do the executives do? They serve the units in their districts.

After looking at a map of our council, the consultant asked “Why is it called the Concho Valley Council when only one-third lies in the Concho Valley.” We shared the story of the merger in 1937 and how the name came to be, but still we were asked “why not change the name to more completely reflect the geographic boundaries and makeup of the council?”.  Good question.

Here are three suggestions for a new council name:

The Southwest Texas Council

The Tejas Council

The Greater Southwest Texas Council

Please take time to call the service center (another change) and let us know which one you prefer, or do you have another suggestion? The decision will be announced at the annual recognition banquet January 10,2004.

Annual Volunteer Council
Recognition Banquet

Saturday, January 10, 2004 at 5:30 PM the Concho Valley Council will recognize its outstanding volunteers for their dedication to serving young people through Scouting.  The recognition dinner will be held at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 37 East Beauregard in San Angelo. The awards will include event and activity leadership certificates and plaques, Eagle Scouts, Veteran recognition, Distinguished Commissioner Awards, and the Silver Beaver award. Silver Beaver nominations are due to the council service center by Friday, November 7, 2003.  Unit leaders, District and Council Committees, and the Executive Board members will be recognized.  All leaders of dens, packs, troops, crews, and posts as well as district and council volunteers are invited.

The dinner will be a ‘POT LUCK’ dinner.  The council will provide the main course, bread, tea, coffee, water, and dinnerware.  Each participating family is requested to provide two dishes (vegetable, salad and or dessert.)

The cost is only $5.00 per person to cover the cost of the main course, drinks, tableware, decorations, and recognition.  Please, pre-register today so that the Council can plan accordingly.
