Once a Scout’s name is entered, it stays in for each drawing. A Scout can only win one prize. The more sheets that are filled out, the more chances a Scout has to win one of these cool prizes. In addition the top 10 popcorn salesmen will be invited to a pizza & movie celebration & the top 3 for the council & top seller in each district will receive savings bonds & be recognized at the council banquet January 8th.
It is increasingly common for donors to leave their residence, vacation home, or other l& to the council after their lifetime. This is often done through a bequest in the donor's will, but there's a way to do the same thing, & get a current tax benefit for doing it. A life estate gift gives you an immediate income tax deduction for promising the local council that it will receive your home or vacation home after your death, and/or the death of your spouse or other family member. You continue to live there & use the property exactly as you do now, & your use is undisturbed until after your lifetime (or that of a spouse as well). The life estate gift helps you get a current income tax benefit for a gift you may have planned to put in your will anyway. Contact Patrick S. Wedding, Scout Executive more information about this interesting & helpful way to benefit your council, as well as you & your family. Many great things have been made possible for Scouting through the use of life estate gifts. Find out for yourself how your house can be more than a home. |
Good Turn for America Since the BSA’s inception in 1910, both Scouts & Scouters alike have learned to live the principles of the Scout Oath & Law through community services & “helping other people at all times.” With our rich history in mind, we are pleased to announce a new service initiative—Good Turn for America. What began with a singular act of service on a foggy London night quickly evolved into daily Good Turns & then into more encompassing national initiatives. These have included selling war bonds, collecting rubber & scrap metal, growing victory gardens during World War II, & more recently, Scouting for Food. We now have the opportunity to raise our levels of community service & increase awareness of the Scouting program within our neighborhoods. Nationally, the Boy Scouts of America has partnered with The Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity, & the American Red Cross to increase our efforts in meeting the challenges of the 21st century. Good Turn for America will build on our members’ & participants’ current service efforts & will also include important partnerships with other community service organizations such as Boys & Girls Clubs, YMCA, civic clubs & local churches. These partnerships will provide many additional avenues for all of our members & participants to provide community service in their neighborhoods. “The concept of serving other people at all times, found in our Scout Oath, is a theme we want to reinforce with both the youth & adults in our programs,” said Patrick Wedding, Concho Valley Council Scout executive. “Good Turn for America is meant to include everyone in the community—you don’t have to be a member of Scouting to make a difference in our community.” Good Turn for America’s next project is “Make a Difference Day” with Habitat for Humanity on October 23rd from 8 AM until Noon at Liberty Court near the corner of 19th & Howard. Scouts will paint, build fence & do other general repairs. All Scouts who attend will be awarded the Good Turn for America patch. Scouts need to wear work clothes & bring gloves.
