Let’s Go Camping!

CUB DAD/FAMILY CAMP

Due to the tremendous response from our last Council Family Camp, it has been decided to change the second Cub Dad weekend to a full Council Family Camp. What does this mean?  First of all the first scheduled weekend for Cub Dad (October 9-10) will be as always—Dads & Cubs come out for the weekend & camp, have fun & have all meals, including lunch on Saturday provided for $20 per person.

The second weekend (October 16-17) is where the changes will take place.  This weekend can be for a Cub & his dad, or mom, or for the whole family! Little brothers, big sisters or vice-a-versa, everyone’s welcome! & there is another twist. If the family would like meals provided, it will cost the same $20, which also includes all program features. If the family would like to provide their own meals, this will be allowed.  The cost would then be $5 for each  person.  Cooking will be permitted in the campsites. This is a way to make sure that more people can afford to attend this fun event.

We will also be repeating something that seemed to work very well at Mom ‘N Me / Family Camp. Those who pre-register will receive a special armband at check-in.  They will get their patch, etc. at check-in, first seating at all meals & a special pass line for program areas.  Those who chose not to pre-register will get their patches, etc. at check-out (depending on quantities, some may have to be ordered after) & will have the regular place in lines for meals & events. This experiment worked to encourage pre-registration & to makes it easier on event coordinators to forecast attendance.

The theme for this year’s camps will be Wild Wild West!.  Cubs will set up camp on the frontier, enjoy a chuckwagon lunch of stew & cornbread or hot dogs. After lunch it will be time for the activities.  What Wild West adventure would be complete without BB-guns & bows & arrows?  What about calf-ropin’, horseshoes, sack races, three-legged races as well as the mud-pit, obstacle course, climbing wall & chunkin’ rocks in the river?  All of these activities plus a few more will be offered at this year’s camp.

Remember—the first weekend will be $20 per person & the second weekend will be the same if you want all meals provided, or $5 for person (bring your own food). T-shirts have been pre-ordered but extras may be available for $12.  You can register as a Pack or as an individual but please call (325) 655-7107 or toll free 1-800-321-7107 for more information.

WEBELOS WOODS 2004
HUGE SUCCESS!

The recent Webelos Woods held September 15-17 at Camp Fawcett was a huge success.  With over 200 participants from across the council, a wonderful program & great weather this was one for the record books. The Webelos were hosted by Boy Scout Troops & participated in various Scouting activities throughout the day Saturday.  Webelos could be seen tying knots & lashing pioneering poles together. Some learned about dutch-oven cooking & prepared their own meals. Still others learned about conservation & the ecology.  Some of the troops in attendance even helped Webelos with activity pins like Outdoorsman & Naturalist. Everyone had the chance to participate in a true Boy Scout campfire Saturday night.

One of the highlights of the event was a dip in the beautiful Nueces river Saturday afternoon.

By attending this event Webelos were able to meet many requirements of the Arrow of Light badge & the Boy Scout Troops were able to show off their knowledge & expertise in the different areas of Scouting.

Scouts & Webelos from San Angelo, Sonora, Del Rio, Uvalde, Crystal City & Grape Creek attended this year’s Webelos Woods making it a true council event.  Plans are already underway for next year’s event.

Special thanks to the Order of the Arrow for hosting & staffing this event.  Peter Perez, Adrian & Andrew Garcia & Brian Sablan, along with other Arrowmen pitched in & provided cheerful service to this worthwhile event.

Philmont Volunteer
Leader Training

Philmont is one of the most famous Scout Ranches in existence.  Many boys have gone on treks there & had a great time.  Philmont also offers a top notch training center.  The best part about the training center is that while the adults are in training conferences their children can attend planned activities, so the whole family can have fun. The Philmont training course outline lists the trainings that Philmont offers by the month they are offered in.  Each month has a theme associated with a specific area in Scouting. Your month might be just around the corner.  Please hurry though, reservations & payments need to made through the Council Office.  For more information please check out the Philmont Training Centers website:
