Summer Camp 2005

Summer Camp 2004 went so well that only a few changes will take place for 2005’s camp. More merit badges will be added, some deleted. The West Texas Ranch Adventure is expected to be offered again, as well as the Trail-Blazer Program (First Class emphasis).

Some things won’t change.  Scouts & Leaders will still enjoy great food in the dining hall.  Canoeing, fishing & hanging out on the banks of the beautiful San Saba river will still be some of camp’s favorite pastimes.

Staff week will be May 29—June 4 followed by three weeks of camp; June 5-11, 12-18 & 19-25.  Reservations are starting to come in & based on last year’s attendance we are expecting a full camp all three weeks so pick your week, select your favorite campsite & get your reservation in as soon as possible for Summer Camp 2005 at Camp Sol Mayer. Reservations can be made by phone to the service center at 325-655-7107 or toll free 800-321-7107.

Trail-Blazer Program

Our Trail-Blazer program is an exciting week long introduction to Scouting for all those who have not yet completed the requirements for First Class rank. Trail-Blazers will learn basic skills in an environment of fun & cooperation. Teamwork is emphasized along with team spirit.  The Trail-Blazer program will be led by older, experienced Scouts. We also encourage Troop Leaders to get involved in this program.  Each Scout will be assigned to a Patrol & will be supervised from 8:30 until 11:50 & again from 1:30 until 4:50.

The Trail-Blazers will work on achievements necessary for ranks up to First Class.  In addition, all Scouts in the Trail-Blazer program will work on the Swimming & First Aid Merit Badges, & the Totin’ Chip.  The highlight of the week will be the Ft. McKavett Trek where Scouts will participate in an evening hike to historic Ft. McKavett & stay overnight in the Buffalo Soldiers bunkhouse.  They will enjoy a tour of the fort followed by a campfire program.  Morning will begin with reveille, breakfast, a service project & a hike back to camp, qualifying each Scout for the Ft. McKavett medal & the Historic Trails award.

West Texas Ranch Adventure

The West Texas Ranch Adventure is a ranch-based, off-camp program designed for advanced campers, ages 14-18, that have done virtually everything at camp before.

Each Scout will be assigned his own horse to ride & take care of along the trail.   After mastering the art of riding, the crew will depart from Camp Sol Mayer & will spend each night at a different ranch & one night in one of the Fort McKavett barracks built in the 1800’s.  Six nights, six ranches, any questions?

The adventure will include an opportunity to round up sheep, cattle & goats, first h& experience working on a wildlife ranch including feeding, scoring & management of elk, black buck, fallow, axis & whitetail deer, experience in predator calling & shooting sport competition, goat roping, swimming in the San Saba River & ranch tanks & river barge fishing. Chuck wagon grub will include wild game meals prepared at the headquarters of the ranches, pancakes, hamburgers, Dutch oven deserts, homemade cookies & more.

The West Texas Ranch Adventure has a limited number of slots available each week, so register early.

2nd ANNUAL CONCHO
VALLEY WINTER CAMP

Yes, that’s right!  We are having Winter Camp again.  Last year was a huge success with lots of Scouts earning badges & having fun. Winter Camp at Camp Sol Mayer is a unique opportunity to work towards merit badges required to make Eagle Scout, in the indoor/outdoor experience. Most of the merit badges offered at Winter Camp are not offered at Summer Camp & a special emphasis is placed on Eagle required merit badges.

Winter Camp will be held December 27th-31st. Registration will be held from 8-Noon on the 27th with lunch being our first meal.  Camp will close at noon on December 31st.

The camp fee will be $100 per Scout. The fee covers all meals, program materials, & a patch.

A $25 reservation fee must be paid to the council service center by December 8th with the full registration paid by the 22nd.  Leaders do not have to pay but are expected to assist with merit badge instruction or meal preparation.  For more information contact the Contact the Concho Valley Council at (800) 321-7107 or  Michael Mitchell at (325) 277-7189.
