Well it’s off to Florida for Matthew Vercher  and his family.  Not for a vacation, but to relocate there.  Matt has been offered and accepted a position to be a District Director for the Miami Lakes Council.  Matt will serve the Florida Keys and part of southern Florida.

Matt has served the Concho Valley Council well since 1999 as a paraprofessional, then District Executive of the Great Permian Basin District and most recently as District Executive for the Amangi Trail District.

Matt has received numerous awards and recognitions during his tenure with the Concho Valley, including Quality District, Chief Scout Executive’s Winners Circle, Boys Life Growth awards and Friends of Scouting Achievement.

The Council will host a farewell reception at the San Angelo Visitors Center on Friday, October 29th from 4:30 to 6:30 PM. Come by, congratulate Matt and wish him the best in his new position.

Permian Cub Scout Recruitment

Cub Scout recruitment this fall in the Permian Basin District has been great so far.  The district needed 200 Cub Scouts by year-end to be a Quality District (similar to the Quality Unit Award).  As a district we have really come together to make things happen.  The leaders and parents of every unit have “Done Their Best” for this fall Cub Scout Recruitment.  So all that left to say is “hats-off” to all of the Permian Basin volunteers.

Farewell to a Great Scouter

The Permian Basin District and the Concho Valley Council would like to bid farewell to a great man and a wonderful Scouter, Mr. James Mathews of Big Lake.  James was laid to rest in Big Lake on August 19, 2004.  James was 80 years young and was doing his “Good Turn” for the day, mowing an elderly ladies lawn when he stirred up some bees.

James was a long-time Scouter in the Concho Valley Council and was a Silver Beaver Recipient, Scoutmaster, FOS Chairman, Unit Commissioner, and  Chartered Organization Representative.  He was a friend to everyone and was always willing to help.

Baden-Powell said the night was a blanket covering the world and whenever a great Scouter passed on that their spirit poked a hole in the blanket and created another star.  We at the Concho Valley Council have no doubt that the stars have been shining a little brighter since Mr. Mathews passing .

Farewell, James Mathews
You will be missed!

Amistad District News

The school year has started with a bang!  The Scouters and Scouts were ready to rock! School Night rallies have been very successful.  Units have been calling in to schedule rallies and Pack 222 in Del Rio has reached the 80-boy mark, an Amistad record! Thanks to the Pack 222 committee for all of their hard efforts in helping with several rallies.  Over 200 new Cub Scouts have been recruited district wide since school started.  If your school has not had a rally yet, call Gerardo Martinez at (830) 703-6343 to schedule a rally.

Welcome to Pack 293 and Troop 293 in Crystal City.  We are very proud to have Scouting make a return to this community. Also, welcome to Pack 284 in Sabinal, Pack 282 in LaPryor and to the new Venture Crew at the First Christian Church in Del Rio.

Webelos Woods was a great success September 17 & 18 at Camp Fawcett.  Several units were in attendance from the Amistad District.  If you did not attend, you missed out on a great event that helped Webelos get a glimpse of what lies ahead on their trail of Scouting.

Cub Dad and Family Camp are just around the corner.  Make plans to attend this Cub Scout event at Camp Sol Mayer and get ready to have some fun!

We are having an outstanding response to the 2004 Popcorn Sale.  So far, 25 units have signed up to sell this year. Amistad is going to have  a banner year with popcorn. The monies earned from the sale will go to help parents and units fund their entire year of program from one great effort.  Pack 244 in Uvalde has challenged all units with a goal of selling $15,000 of popcorn this year.  They stand to raise over $6000 for unit program.

District Committee meetings are held at the EMS building in Bracketville every 3rd Monday of each month at 7 PM. Everyone is invited to attend. Roundtables are also being planned to move to Bracketville soon.
