Let’s Go Camping!

FUN WITH SON
A HIT ON ALL STOPS!

There were 209 passengers aboard the train full of fun at last month’s Fun With Son event. Cub Scouts and their adult partners enjoyed BB-Guns, Bows and Arrows, the Mud Pit, Paddleboats and other activities. Some of the adults even summoned up enough courage to rappel down the 60-foot tower for the first time. Speaking of first times, a lot of the Cubs who attended were enjoying their first camping experience with the Scouts. Folks, that is what it is all about. Providing the opportunity for these boys to come to camp and spend some truly quality time under the stars, around the campfire, roasting marshmallows, telling ghost stories and creating memories that will be with them (Cubs and parents) for the rest of their lives.

One of the biggest hits of the weekend was the model train problem-solving activity provided by Charles and Dan Anderson. Thank to both those gentlemen young Charlie and dozens of other Scouts became completely fascinated by an experience that most of them would never have the chance to have.

Hats off to Bo Strickland and his team of volunteers who helped make the weekend a true success.  Thanks also to Mike and Sara Beth Erickson for some great food!

FAMILY CAMPERS ENJOY GREAT WEATHER AND PROGRAM!

Another successful Family Camp is in the books and as was stated in the above article regarding Fun With Son, a lot of Cubs got the opportunity for a great experience that they shared with members of their family.  A little different twist to this year’s Family Camp; all in attendance cooked for themselves. Some families grilled steaks and hamburgers or hot dogs, while others were content with left-over fried chicken or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.  Whatever the case they all  had the chance to share in the activities of the weekend and spend some time camping together.

Thanks to Jared Ducote for heading up this wonderful event and a special toot of the whistle for all of his dedicated staff who spent their weekend providing meaningful program for the 389 Cub Scouts and family members who attended!

WHAT IS WINTER CAMP?

Winter Camp is a unique opportunity for Scouts to work toward merit badges required for Eagle Scout award, in the indoor/outdoor experience.  Yes! Even with chill in the air, each Scout will work on merit badges, most of which are not normally offered during a summer camp program.

WHEN & WHERE IS
WINTER CAMP?

Winter Camp will be at Camp Sol Mayer, located 3 miles east of Ft. McKavett, TX on FM 864,  and 20 miles West of Menard, Texas.  Camp starts on Tuesday, December 27 and continues to Saturday, December 31.  Registration and Camp set-up will be from 8am-12am, December 27 with camp closing at noon, December 31, So you can enjoy the New Year!

WHY A WINTER CAMP?

Why not a winter camp?  We offer a Scout this learning opportunity during a time when he is out of school and looking for something exciting to do.  Since the weather will drive most Scouts indoors, we will take advantage by offering him required indoor and outdoor merit badges which he considers difficult under the guise of fun at camp.  Also, we hope to stimulate Scouts who are currently First Class, Star, and Life to reach the ultimate goal of Eagle.  We even offer programs for scouts who are Eagle and want to earn palms!

WHAT WILL BE OFFERED?

We will offer the following merit badges:  Camping , American Cultures, Citizenship in the Com- munity, Computers, Citizenship in the Nation, Dog Care, Citizenship in the World, Fire Safety, Climbing, Graphic Art, Communications, Art, Emergency Preparedness, Law, Environmental Science, Music, First Aid, Orienteering, Personal Fitness, Pioneering, Personal Management, Public Speaking, Safety, Scholarship, Shotgun Shooting, Weather, Sports, and a lot of fun!
