Amangi Trail Seeks Unit Commissioners

The Amangi Trail District is seeking volunteers to take on the respon- sibilities of a Unit Commissioner.

Unit Commissioners act as the eyes and ears of the district, keeping Packs and Troops informed of things going on and making sure that unit leaders are trained and prepared to provide a quality program for the Scouts they serve.

The best way to describe a Unit commissioner is as a “friend to the unit." Another way to put into words what a Unit Commissioner does is to act as the country doctor.  In this role the Unit Commissioner diagnoses symptoms of a unit and then reports back to the District Committee where the “specialists” can provide treatment.

There will be a meeting on May 17th at 7 PM at the Scout office to coordinate the efforts of our Unit Commissioners for the coming year.  There will also be training for Unit Commissioenrs at University of Scouting on May 21st.

For more information contact Richard Kitchen at 325-655-7107, or 277-5712.

District Committee Changes

Over the past few months we have had several changes to our District Committee. Changes in people, places and times of the District Committee (DC) meetings.  Our DC meetings are now on the first Tuesday of every month.  The time will be at 7PM and the meetings will rotate to different towns every month.  If you are interested in hosting a meeting please let Mike Mitchell know.

We have added several new people although our District Committee is not full yet.  Serving as our Nominating Committee Chairman is Judge Larry Isom of Big Lake.  Larry is a former Scoutmaster and has two Eagle Scout sons.  Larry is committed to recruiting the best people to fill our District Committee.  Our new District Chairman is Judge Leon Standard of Mertzon. Judge Standard was an avid Scouter as a youth and has kept in touch with Scouting as an adult.  His passion for Scouting came to the Nominating Committee’s attention and was promptly asked to serve as our Chairman. Our District Commissioner is Dr. John Fluth of Ozona.  John is the Ozona Methodist Minister as well as our immediate past Chairman.  John is an Eagle Scout from San Angelo and is looking forward to getting a good strong Commissioners Corps going this year.  Last but not least is Mike Bahm of Mertzon.  Mike is our immediate past Commissioner and is now serving as the District Training Chairman.  Mike found, as a Commissioner, that training is the most important aspect of recruiting new leaders and also found that training was his passion.  Mike is a TRAVELING TRAINER.  That’s right, I said traveling.  If you need training (any kind) Mike is willing to come to you and get you and your crew trained.

There are still many position needing to be filled on the District Committee and we are working hard to fill those now.  If you have someone in you town that you would like to see on OUR District Committee please let Mike Mitchell know.

Amistad District

I would like thank County Judge William  Mitchell of Uvalde for outstanding service as District Chairman of Amistad District.  This year Terry Crawford, Sheriff of Uvalde has agreed to serve as Amistad District Chairman.  Gary Burt has agreed to serve as District Commissioner for Amistad District.  They are very valued volunteers.   We are lucky to have this quality of leadership.   They are both working to fill their respective committees.

I would like to thank the Nominating Committee for Amistad District for this years excellent service to fill the positions.   The Nominating Committee consists of  General Prather, Rene Garza, Gary Burt, Freddy Flores and Mike Garcia.  These are volunteers behind the scenes that make our program successful.

Amistad District is currently conducting a Friends of Scouting Campaign, District wide to raise $45,000.00 to fill its fair share of supporting the Concho Valley Council Budget.  This money is invested back into the District supporting the camps used by the Scouts, membership growth, insurance, public relations, a unit serving executive, record keeping, training for leaders and youth, scouting activities, and administrative support.

You are all reminded Round Table Training is held in Brackettville, at the Methodist Church Hall one block west of Kinney County Court House.  Training is at 7:00 PM, every first Thursday of each month.  The next Round Tables are April 7th  and May 5th .

Scout Master and leader Training  I,II, and III is scheduled for April 8 and 9, 2005.  All Boy Scout leaders needing training are urged to attend.  The training will be held at Fort Inge in Uvalde.  The Training Chairman is Danny Williams.  The event will start at 5:00 PM Friday 04-08-05.  Call Gerardo Martinez (830) 703-6343 if you are interested in attending.
