Summer Camp 2004 went so well that only
a few changes will take place for 2005’s
camp. More merit badges will be added, some
deleted. The West Texas Ranch Adventure
is expected to be offered again, as well
as the Trail-Blazer Program (First Class
emphasis).
Some things won’t change. Scouts
and Leaders will still enjoy great food
in the dining hall. Canoeing, fishing
and hanging out on the banks of the beautiful
San Saba river will still be some of camp’s
favorite pasttimes.
Staff week will be May 29—June 4 followed
by three weeks of camp; June 5-11, 12-18
and 19-25. Reservations are starting
to come in and based on last year’s attendance
we are expecting a full camp all three weeks
so pick your week, select your favorite
campsite and get your reservation in as
soon as possible for Summer Camp 2005 at
Camp Sol Mayer. Reservations can be made
by phone to the service center at 325-655-7107
or toll free 800-321-7107.
Applications are now being accepted for
all summer camp staff positions, including;
Assistant Program Director, Area Directors,
Merit Badge Counselors, Camp Commissioners,
Cooks and Dining Hall Manager. Applications
are available at the service center.

Trail-Blazer Program
Our Trail-Blazer program is an exciting
week long introduction to Scouting for all
those who have not yet completed the requirements
for First Class rank. Trail-Blazers will
learn basic skills in an environment of
fun and cooperation. Teamwork is emphasized
along with team spirit. The Trail-Blazer
program will be led by older, experienced
Scouts. We also encourage Troop Leaders to
get involved in this program. Each Scout
will be assigned to a Patrol and will be
supervised from 8:30 until 11:50 and again
from 1:30 until 4:50.
The Trail-Blazers will work on achievements
necessary for ranks up to First Class. In
addition, all Scouts in the Trail-Blazer
program will work on the Swimming and First
Aid Merit Badges, and the Totin’ Chip. The
highlight of the week will be the Ft. McKavett
Trek where Scouts will participate in an
evening hike to historic Ft. McKavett and
stay overnight in the Buffalo Soldiers bunkhouse.
They will enjoy a tour of the fort
followed by a campfire program. Morning
will begin with reveille, breakfast, a service
project and a hike back to camp, qualifying
each Scout for the Ft. McKavett medal and
the Historic Trails award.

West Texas Ranch Adventure
The West Texas Ranch Adventure is a ranch-based,
off-camp program designed for advanced campers,
ages 14-18, that have done virtually everything
at camp before.
Each Scout will be assigned his own horse
to ride and take care of along the trail.
After mastering the art of riding,
the crew will depart from Camp Sol Mayer
and will spend each night at a different
ranch and one night in one of the Fort McKavett
barracks built in the 1800’s. Six
nights, six ranches, any questions?
The adventure will include an opportunity
to round up sheep, cattle and goats, first
hand experience working on a wildlife ranch
including feeding, scoring and management
of elk, black buck, fallow, axis and whitetail
deer, experience in predator calling and
shooting sport competition, goat roping,
swimming in the San Saba River and ranch
tanks and river barge fishing. Chuck wagon
grub will include wild game meals prepared
at the headquarters of the ranches, pancakes,
hamburgers, Dutch oven deserts, homemade
cookies and more.
The West Texas Ranch Adventure has a
limited number of slots available each week,
so register early.

MOM
N ME / FAMILY CAMP SET FOR MAY 2005
Due to the continued positive response
from our Council Family Camps, it has been
decided to keep the second weekend of both
the Mom N Me and Cub Dad Camps to Council
Family Camps for 2005. This means
that from now on the first scheduled weekend
for Mom N Me (April 30—May 1) will be as
always—Moms and Cubs come out for the weekend
to camp, have fun and have all meals, including
lunch on Saturday provided for $20 per person.
The second weekend (May 7-8) is where
the changes will take place. This
weekend can be for a Cub and his mom or
dad, or for the whole family! Grandparents,
uncles and aunts, little brothers, big sisters
or vice-a-versa, everyone’s welcome! Families
would like meals provided will cost the
same $20 per person, which also includes
all program features. Families who would
like to provide their own meals, the cost
will be $5 for each person. Cooking
will be permitted in the campsites. This
is a way to make sure that more people can
afford to attend this fun event.
Something else that seems to be working
very well at Mom ‘N Me / Family Camp. Those
who pre-register will again receive a special
armband at check-in. They will get their
patch, etc. at check-in, first seating at
all meals and a special pass line for certain
program areas. Those who chose not
to pre-register will get their patches,
etc. at check-out ( depending on quantities,
some may have to be ordered after) and will
have the regular place in lines for meals
and events. This continues to encourage
pre-registration and to makes it easier
on event coordinators to forecast attendance.
The theme for this year’s camps will
be birthday blowout! It’s the 75th
anniversary of Cub Scouting and we are going
to have a party!. Cubs will set up
camp, enjoy a birthday lunch of hot dogs
and hamburgers. After lunch it will
be time for the activities. There
will be BB-guns and bows and arrows and
the pool will be open. There will
be other Cub camp staples like the mud-pit,
obstacle course, climbing wall and chunkin’
rocks in the river, but there may be a few
Birthday Party surprises as well! What Cub
Scout birthday party would be complete without
a pinewood derby race? Bring your PWD cars
and we will find out who has the fastest
car in the council!
Remember—the first weekend will be $20
per person and the second weekend will be
the same if you want all meals provided,
or $5 for person (bring your own food).
T-shirts will be available for $10
if pre-ordered only a few extras will be
available for $12 at camp. You can register
as a Pack or as an individual but please
call (325) 655-7107 or toll free 1-800-321-7107
for more information.

ANNUAL COUNCIL WINTER CAMP IS A SUCCESS!
The Concho Valley Council held its second
annual winter camp the last week of 2004.
58 Boy Scouts earned over 200
merit badges while enjoying great food and
some afternoon and evening activities like
shotgun shooting, repelling and movies.
Most of the merit badges offered at winter
camp are not available at summer camp and
the majority are Eagle required.
Mike Bahm, winter camp director, and
Keith Mahler, winter camp commis- sioner
reported that in addition to the great food,
wonderful weather and extra activities enjoyed
by the participants, many Scouts made significant
progress towards their Eagle rank.
If winter camp can help one boy reach
Eagle who otherwise might not have made
it, then it is worth all of the effort.
