YOUR WILL AND THE
FUTURE OF CHARITY

We’ve seen some interesting statistics lately about wills and bequests in America. Did you know:

  • 70% of the people in this country who are old enough to have a will do not have a will of any kind;
  • 70% of those who do have wills say that their will is not up to date, or it does not dispose of their property the way they want it to;
  • 20% of all the people who die each year have no surviving spouse, children, or parents to leave their estate to.

Wills provide many ways for you to benefit the Concho Valley Council. But, of course, you can also benefit your church, schools, and other worthy organizations you support. You can leave specific amounts or property, or you can leave a percentage of your estate. You can create memorial gifts in honor of a friend or create a charitable trust to generate income to you and your family. The possibilities are almost limitless.

A will gives you a lot of options as you decide how your estate will be distributed. But, if you have no will, you have no options. Call the Concho Valley Council and ask Patrick S. Wedding, Scout Executive for more information about giving to Scouting through your will. It’s a chance to make a significant gift to Scouting and also protect your estate for your family, loved ones and other organizations.

Let us know how we can help.

How can I help without volunteering or giving money?

While that seems a strange question, the answer is a simple one and an important one. Every year dozens of people, firms and organizations provide support to the Concho Valley Council and never send a check or attend a meeting. These gifts are projects sales.

Often these take the form of a “gift in kind.” This is when a good or service that the council would normally have to purchase with Friends of Scouting dollars is provided at no cost. Everything from paper clips to toilet paper, reams of papers to cases of fluorescent light tubes, bales of hay to sets of tires are all vital to the on going programs of the council. Of course making sure that the right sizes or amounts of these items are received in a timely basis is very important.

So if you have a surplus of something sitting in a closet at home or work, please contact the Council Office by e-mail bsa741@gte.net or call 655-7107/ 800-321-7107 to see if your abundance is in short supply.

Friends of Scouting: Aren't we all?

This year's annual Friends of Scouting campaign will raise over $218,000 in just over 120 days. Your support of this effort is extremely impor- tant to the overall success of the mission of the Concho Valley Council. Delivering the promise of Scouting to over 3000 youth and leaders is only possible through this process.

Those values are found in the Scout Oath and Law. It is with this in mind that this year's Friends of Scouting council shoulder patch bears the words, "Obedient and Cheerful.” This is the fourth in the Scout Law series. Youth all across the twenty-four county area are trusting in you to do your part during the Friends of Scouting effort. But what is your part you ask? First, make your own pledge and fulfill it. Whatever the amount, set the example for others. Second, make sure that a unit presentation is scheduled and conducted in your unit. Third, take the time to tell someone else the story of Scouting, how it affects your life and those of the youth you lead.
