100th Anniversary of World Scouting Movement
In celebration of Scouting’s 100th Anniversary of Baden Powell’s founding the first Boy Scout Troop on Brownsea Island August 1, 1907. Three events will be held for Scouts and Scouters in the Concho Valley Council.
August 1st Ceremony**
On August 1st at 8 am, Scouts from across the country will gather for a 30 minute ceremony. We encourage Scouts and Scouters to remember that day with something special. Volunteers have organized one of the ceremonies in front of the Court House in downtown San Angelo. You are welcome to attend. If you would to plan one in your neighborhood, please call Field Director Devin Koehler for the agenda.
Anniversary Campout**
A special weekend at Camp Sol Mayer to celebrate the 100th Anniversary will be held on August 4th & 5th. This weekend will be a Troop, Pack, or Family Campout. “1907 Games Played at Brownsea Island” from the first Troop Campout will take place from 2-5 pm with a campfire at dusk. Food will not be provided and there is no fee for the event so “Be Prepared”.
Wood Badge Reunion**
Come for Wood Badge fun and fellowship. Families are welcome. This will be Pot Luck with everyone bringing a dish and will be held from 11 am until 1:30 pm at Camp Sol Mayer on August 4th Beverages will be furnished. Feel free to invite other Wood Badgers from your patrol or course and to bring your Wood Badge memorabilia to show. You are welcome to spend the afternoon and camp that night as packs and troops will be in camp for the celebration.

GUIDE TO SAFE SCOUTING
A unit’s leader guide for Current Policies and Procedures for Safe Scouting, every unit should have a copy. The book can be purchased or you may print a copy by going to; http://www.scouting.org, then Site Map, then Publications, the Guide to Safe Scouting on the internet Or Search the Web for “Guide to Safe Scouting”.
The purpose of the Guide to Safe Scouting is to prepare adult leaders to conduct Scouting activities in a safe and prudent manner. We have a responsibility to protect our youth; limitations on certain activities should not be view as stumbling blocks.
Unit leaders should be aware of certain State or Local Government regulations that supersede Boy Scout of America Guidelines. When considering activities not covered in the literature evaluate the risks and safety of the activity, ask yourself,” does the activity further the Aims and Methods of Scouting?” ABOVE ALL EVERY LEADER NEEDS TO BE TRAINED AS A LEADER BY THE BOY

2007 BOYS’ LIFE
READING CONTEST
Write a one-page report titled “The Best Book I Read This Year” and enter it in the Boys’ Life 2007 “Say Yes to Reading!” contest. The book can be fiction or nonfiction. But the report has to be in your own words — 500 words tops. Enter in one of these three age categories: 8 years old and younger or 9 and 10 years old or 11 years old and older .
First-place winners in each age category will receive a $100 gift certificate good for any product in the Boy Scouts official retail catalog. Second-place winners will receive a $75 gift certificate, and third-place winners a $50 certificate. Everyone who enters will get a free patch like the one on this page. (And, yes, the
patch is a temporary insignia, so it can be worn on the Boy Scout uniform shirt, on the right pocket. Proudly display it there or anywhere!) In coming years, you’ll have the opportunity to earn other patches.
The contest is open to all Boys’ Life readers. Be sure to include your name, address, age and grade in school on the entry. Send your report, along with a business-size, self-addressed, stamped envelope, to: Boys’ Life Reading Contest, S306, P.O. Box 152079, Irving, TX 75015-2079. Entries must be postmarked by Dec. 31, 2007 and must include entry information and a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
