The statistics alone would tell even the causal observer that it was a very good year in Scouting. Some of the numbers include: 40% increase in Cub Scout Advancement, 10% increase in the number of adult volunteers, 67% Centennial Units, 94% Unit Retention, 63% Youth Retention, 16% more trained leaders and 15% growth in Boy’s Life subscriptions. It is evident that you are delivering
the promises of Scouting to youth all across the council.
Your efforts have not gone unnoticed. At mid-year all three districts and the council were in the Chief Scout Executive’s Winners’ Circle. And, the Financially Sustainable Council Achievement Award was presented to the Concho Valley Council. The Amistad District was named a Centennial Quality District, the only one in the council. The council was recognized by both Area Two and the Southern Region for leadership in traditional
membership
growth. This was in addition to being named as a Centennial Quality Council by the National Council, B.S.A.
Awards and numbers are external ways to track what is accomplished by any organization. But here is the simple reason we are involved in Scouting. Finally, at a meeting a few months ago when a volunteer was making a presentation. She was asked, “Why did you get involved with Scouting?” Her response was, “I wanted my son to be in something that reinforced and supported the values we taught at home and church.” She was further questioned,
”Well there must have been some choices to make as to which one?” This was in reference to what activity to choose for her sons to participate. Her answer was timeless, poignant and succinct, “No not really, Scouting was the ONLY one.” That tells us all why we all give our time, money and talents. Thank You.
