New Boy Scout Rank Requirements
On Monday, November 19th, the National Council, Program Group, Boy Scout Division informed us of the upcoming implementation of new and revised Boy Scout rank requirements. These changes and effective date are quoted verbatim here. The National Youth Protection Committee recommended additions to Boy Scout rank requirements that were approved and will become effective January 1, 2008. These changes
will help us advance the importance of Youth Protection training beyond the initial Boy Scout joining requirements, and keep youth informed and actively engaged in understanding the key elements of personal safety and protection.
Tenderfoot Rank Revised requirement 9: Explain the importance of the buddy system as it relates to your personal safety on outings and in your neighborhood. Describe what a bully is and how you should respond to one. Second Class Rank New requirement 8b: Explain the three R’s of personal safety and protection. First Class Rank New requirement 12: Describe the three things you should avoid doing related to use of the Internet. Describe a cyber bully and how you should respond to one.
The changes will be represented in the 2008 Boy Scout Requirements book and the revised ninth printing of the 11th edition of the Boy Scout Handbook. Updated Hanbooks will be available for purchase this summer.

2007 Winter Camp at Camp Sol Mayer
The Concho Valley Council Boy Scouts of America hosted another year of Winter Camp at Camp Sol Mayer near Fort McKavett. The four day event started on Thursday December 27, 2007 and lasted through Sunday December 30th, 2007. The Winter Camp was held for Boy Scout members all across the area. In addition to the boys attending Winter Camp from our service area, we also had three troops from Austin area and one from San Antonio at Camp Sol Mayer. On
this particular Week of Winter Camp 2007 we fed up to 120 people in our Dinning Hall over the four day period. Fifty brave campers got a chance to tour the Fort McKavett Historical Site for part of their Citizenship in the Community merit badge class. Each youth camper was able to participate in a weeks worth of Merit Badges, program activities, and games. Over 20 merit badges (at least 9 required and 11 elective) were offered. Each morning of camp started with a flag ceremony followed by a hearty breakfast.
Throughout the day each boy got some time to complete up to four merit badges. In the evening after a well prepared dinner and retreat ceremony, the camp had an opportunity to join in on fun and games. The evening activities ranged from board games, to movies, and camp fire presentation put on by all of the campers in attendance. Sunday Morning, December 30th, closed the week’s events with an all Faith Vesper Service and than a farewell ceremony where all that were in attendance received a commemorative 2007
Winter Camp Patch. Many merit badges were earned.
