New Silver Beavers

Each year the Concho Valley Council has the opportunity to recognize a limited number of Scouters in the Council by awarding them the Silver Beaver.    This award is conferred by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America on the recommendation of the local Council to those who have given “Distinguished Service to Boyhood”.  The number of awards that can be conferred each year is based on the number of units registered to the Council the preceding year.

Concho Valley Council recognized three Scouters for “Distinguished Service to Boyhood” by awarding the Silver Beaver award at the district recognition banquets.  Bobby Schmidt and Bruce Willig were recognized at the Amangi Trail District Banquet and  Jaime Limas was recognized at the Amistad District Banquet.

Bobby Schmidt serves as a role model not only to those adults he deals with daily, but to the youth of his community.   He is an Eagle Scout originally from Fredricksburg, Texas.

He has served as a Webelos Leader in Burnet, Assistant Scoutmaster and Scoutmaster with Troop 425 in Brady and Brady Friends of Scouting chairman and enroller. Bobby received the  District Award of Merit in 1995, has the Scoutmaster Award of Merit and is a member of the Order of the Arrow.

Bobby has been with the US Department of Agriculture for twenty-seven years and is currently the County Executive Director of the USDA/FFA for McCulloch County.

He is married to Kerry,  who supports him in his community involvement along with his three children: Eagle Scout Kyle; Lindsey, a former Girl Scout; and Ryan, a First Class Scout in Troop 425.

Bruce W. Willig became a Cub Scout in San Angelo, then moved to Troop 9 where he earned his Eagle Award, then on to Sea Scout Ship 22.

As an adult Scouter he has served on the unit level as an associate Skipper with Ship 22, Charter Partner Representative for Troop 9, and Den Leader/Webelos Leader for Pack 7.  Bruce has served on the Council Executive Board since 1993 and is currently its President in his second term.  He has the Den and Webelos Leader Training awards, his Wood Badge beads and is a Brotherhood Member of the order of the Arrow.

A graduate of the University of Texas Bruce is Vice-president and General Manager of Western Iron Works.

Bruce believes in the Scouting program and admits to marrying a Scout.  He met his wife Darlene when she joined the Sailing Post.  Their son Brooks is a First Class Scout with Troop 9 and daughter Laura is a Brownie.

Jaime Limas, a retired Master Sergeant with the US Air Force, began Scouting along with his son at Dyess AFB.  Currently he’s Committee Chairman of Troop 280 at Laughlin AFB and serves as liaison between the Asociacion Scouts de Mexico and the Concho Valley Council.

Past positions in Scouting include Scoutmaster of Troop 255 and Troop 280, Amistad  District Training Team, Chairman  of Activities Committee, and District Commissioner.  He has his Wood Badge beads and was assistant Scoutmaster for the 1993 National Jamboree.  Jaime is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow.

A Letter to All Amangi Trail Scoutmasters

This year, we have an opportunity to reach out and help more boys.  Starting September 21st, I am asking all Scoutmasters to have an “open house” and invite neighborhood youth into their troop meetings.  I will be contacting all Scoutmasters in order to update the list of meeting times/places, and this information will be going out to area 6th and 7th graders.

With all the problems young boys face today, the chance to meet in Scouts and do positive, self-enhancing activities may  keep these boys out of trouble later,

Sincerely,
Don Cheek,
Amangi Trail District Executive

Scouting for Food

The Concho Valley Council Boy Scouts will join with the El Camino Council Girl Scouts  to help the Concho Valley Regional Food Bank to observe National Food Bank Week October 11-17.  The food bank, one of the 280 food banks in the National Second Harvest Food Bank network, has been operational in the Concho Valley for 15 years.  During that time, the food bank has processed over 12 million pounds of salvaged grocery products.

The food bank’s annual GIFT-A-CAN food drive will be held at local grocers on October 17th from 8 am to 6 pm.  Boy and Girl Scouts will hand out bags to customers at store entrances and ask them to drop the filled bags in containers as they leave the store.  The food gathered in these drives will be used to feed needy during the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.
