Amangi Trail District

The Amangi Trail fall camporee will be held on the 24th of October at Camp Fawcett.  Cost is $5.00, and includes a leaders crackerbarrel and special collectors edition patch.  Emphasis will be on patrol method, with timed and graded events based on Tenderfoot, 2nd Class and 1st Class rank  requirements.  Heavy emphasis will be placed on aquatic events, including an early-morning Polar Bear splash.

Permian Basin District

The Permian Basin District will hold the annual fall camporee on October 9th through October 11th. Campaign chairperson for this event is John Paul Henderson. The camporee will be held in Junction. The camporee will revolve around canoeing events. All participants will receive Safety Afloat and Safe Swim Defense Training.

Registration will be Friday evening. The registration fee will be $5.00 per participant. All troops are encouraged to invite a Webelos Den to attend with them. Please call John Paul Henderson after 5:00p.m. at 446-3183 or the Scout Service Center at (915) 655-7107  with any questions.

Amistad District &  Winter Garden District

Amistad & Winter Garden Districts will hold their Fall Camporee at Camp Fawcett October 23rd-25th.

Wood Badge Training

Come spend a few weekends in Scouting Paradise.  Wood Badge Training SR276 will be held at Hughes Aquatic Base & Training Center October 10-ll, 23-25 and  November 6-8, 1998.

Weekend Wood Badge is an intensive week of Boy Scout Leader training in troop leadership skills and operation.

Qualifications include:

1.

Be currently registered as a Scouter.

2.

Be 21 years of age unless you are an ASM then you can be 18+.

3.

Have a practical understanding of Troop Operation Have completed Boy Scout Leader Fast Start and Scoutmastership Fundamentals Training.

4.

Have your local Scout Executive’s approval.

5.

Have a Class 3 medical exam form showing physical ability to par- ticipate in this experience.

Cost of the course is  $145 which can be paid by cash ( 5 payments of $29 each) or credit card (Visa or Mastercard).     This Wood Badge Course is limited to 64 participants.  A deposit of $29 is required to hold your place in the course.

Venturing A New Program

On August 1, 1998 the Boy Scouts of America launched the new Venturing program.  Current outdoor, youth ministry and hobby Explorer posts will become Venturing crews or Sea Scout ships.  Career Explorer posts will be moved to the Learning for Life program.

The decision will be made on the basis of special interest codes.  Those special interests which are primarily workplace - based have been designated as Exploring.  Those special interests which are primarily outdoor, youth ministry,  or hobby-based have been designated as Venturing.

Explorer posts will receive com - munications from the National Council related to their specialty and may be invited to specialty conferences such as the National Law enforcement Conference.  Venturing crews will receive information related to their specialty.

Venturing uses six experience areas to promote character development, leadership development, and personal fitness for every member.

The Venturing Oath:  As a Venturer, I promise to help stregthen America, to be faithful in my religious duties, to help others, and to seek truth, fairness, and adventure in our world.

Venturing is for boys and girls at least 14 years of age and have completed the eighth grade or 15 years of age and not yet 21.

National Order of the Arrow Conference

Thousands of Arrowmen  converged on the campus of Iowa State University in Ames.  The conference took place August 2-6, 1998.

Theme for the conference was "Memories of the Past - A Vision for the Future".  From the time the curtain rose for the opening until it closed for the last time, NOAC was a nonstop, action - packed event for all  Arrowmen.  Activities include OA Jeopardy, training, ceremonies evaluations and American Indian events.  There were also  shows and patch trading.

Arrowmen attending from Wahinkto Lodge 199 were Jerry, Brenda and Jason White, Robbie Archer, Robert  and Luke Burnett and Lodge Chief  Louis Torres.

OA Fall Induction

The Order of the Arrow Fall Ordeal will be conducted at Camp Sol Mayer on September 11th-13th.  All candidates elected and called out this summer who were unable to attend the July Ordeal held at Camp Sol Mayer should make every attempt to attend this Ordeal.  The weekend will cost $25 for Ordeal Candidates, $18 for Brotherhood Candidates, and  $10 for all other OA Members if preregistered.  An additional charge will be made at camp if not preregistered.

Candidates are urged to arrive before 8 pm Friday.  Bring your bedroll, work clothes, Scout uniform and personal toiletry items.

New Vigil Members

Wahinkto Lodge called out and inducted six new Vigil Honor members at the H.E.B. Fellowship in December.  The six  new Vigil Members are Robert Burnett, Richard O’Neill, Louis Torres, Jim Lay, Sam Shimp, Jr., and Gary Shrum.
