Philmont

Congratulations (?) to Jimmy Brashear, Dennis Coyan, Pat Mercer, Steve Sells, Fred Sturm, and Audrey Truelove.  They will be taking 18 Boy Scouts from the Concho Valley Council  to Philmont this summer.  For 12 fun-filled days and nights, these dedicated volunteers can expect: no TV, no 'phones, no interruptions; fresh air, plenty of exercise and fine outdoor dining; beautiful scenery and restful nights in Scouting's Paradise - Philmont Scout Ranch.

Advisors and Crew Members will depart on June 30th and return on July 13th.  Working together, each crew will prepare their own food, hike along scenic mountain trails, and participate in the many varied activities that Philmont offers.  The Philmont Trek is one of the most significant and memorable activities a Scout may participate in.  Philmont Trek participants all state that the Philmont experience changed their lives and taught them how to rely on both themselves and others.  The 2000 Philmont Trek is full, but there are still reservations available for July 10, 2001.  Contact Donald Cheek at the council office for more information.

TWO MAJOR FUNDRAISING
EVENTS ANNOUNCED

Your Executive Board has announced its intent to organize two major fund raising events to help balance the Council budget in 2000.

On Sunday, August 6, 2000 the council will join with the Lynn Alexander Autogroup and the Western PGA and host a Pro-Am Golf Tournament at the San Angelo Country Club.  Gary Shrum, Jamie Crow, John Mayer and Brad Morris will give leadership for this event.  Last year this event grossed over $16,000 for Scouting.

On Saturday, August 19, 2000 the council will host the Showdown in Wooltown Sporting Clay event at the San Angelo Clay Bird Association facility located West of San Angelo off Highway 67.  Kent Terrill and Kirk Cleere will give leadership to this event.

Round Table

Most leaders don't know that Round Table is a form of training.  Do you need good hints on how to run a better Den Meeting?  Go to Round Table.  Have no idea what to do for your Pack Meeting?  Come to Round Table.  Don't know how to plan and carry out an Eagle Scout Project?  Attend Round Table.  Meetings take one hour and are held on the second Thursday of every month at St. Paul's Presbyterian Church (the round church across the street from Central High School).

Themes for March are:
Tigers - Discover Nature & Energy; Cubs - Bugs & Things;
Webelos - Sportsman, Family Member; Boy Scouts - The New Boy Scout.

Themes for April are:
Tigers-Go See It;
Cubs-See the Forest For the Trees; Webelos-Outdoorsman, Handyman; Boy Scouts-Prepare for Summer Camp.

Not only will you help your Pack or Troop, you'll have FUN.

Training

Every boy deserves a trained leader.  Statistics show that Packs, Troops and Crews that have trained leaders are more likely to: grow, advance, keep boys involved, recharter on time, and get parents involved in unit functions.  Training takes little time and less money, and will benefit your unit immeasurably.  See to it that your unit has the best possible chance to succeed.  Encourage your parents and leaders to take training NOW.  Check the District Calendar or call the council office today for the next training date.

Behind the Windshield

Thanks to all the volunteers who have worked so hard to provide a quality program for our Scouts.  My personal thanks to everyone who attended the District Awards banquet, and my special gratitude to those volunteers who have taken charge of the following events:

  • District Awards Banquet,
  • Merit Badge Workshop
  • Pinewood Derby
  • West Texas Rendezvous
  • Mom & Me

It's that time of the year again, time to fight the paper tiger once more.  If your unit recharters in February or March and HAS NOT received it's recharter packet yet, call me AT ONCE.  Remember, a unit that has dropped it's charter IS NO LONGER COVERED BY INSURANCE and will not be allowed to participate in District or Council events, will not be allowed to submit advancement, cannot attend summer camp, nor hold an Eagle Board of Review.

It is also time to think about Webelos crossover.  If you need help scheduling Troop visits or bridging ceremonies, please call me. Webelos crossover is a memorable event in the life of  young boy, one that he will treasure for years to come.

Don't ever feel unappreciated.  The boys may not show it, but YOU are one of the most important people in their lives.  they may not remember the names of all of their teachers or all of their coaches, but  they will remember who their Den Leader or Cubmaster or Scoutmaster was.  They won't remember what  their favorite TV program was, but they will never forget that Mr. Smith took them to summer camp..  Yes, you do make a difference.

Donald J. Cheek, District Executive
