Concho Valley Council Recognizes Silver Beavers
On Saturday, March 12, 2000, Scouts and Scouters from across the Concho Valley Council gathered to recognize the accomplishments of several of our leaders. The Silver Beavers for 1999 are: J. Mark McLaughlin of San Angelo, James L. (Jimmie) Powell of Ft. McKavett,
Linda Schreiber of Del Rio, and Don Griffis of San Angelo.

Don W. Griffis An
Executive Board Member, Don served as our
Council President from 1993-1994. Just
a few of the many roles Don has shouldered
for Scouting include; Council Friends
of Scouting, Major Campaign in 1995,1996,
and 2000, Cubmaster, Webelos, Leader and
Den Leader for Pack 7 and as Scoutmaster
of Troop 1.
A community leader in
the truest sense, Don is unselfish with
his time and works with the many organizations
to make our community a better place for
all. Don's Community involvement includes,
service for 2 terms as a San Angelo City
Councilman, Board Member and Past President
of the Y.M.C.A. of San Angelo, Board Member
of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce, St.
John's Hospital Foundation, the American
Red Cross, the West Texas Rehabilitation
Center, and as a member of the United Way
of the Concho Valley allocation committee.
A former Marine Corps Officer, Don
is a recipient of the Bronze Star and the
Vietnamese Cross for Gallantry. A
practicing Attorney, Don is a past president
of the Tom Green County Bar Association.

Mark McLaughlin began
his association with Scouting as a Boy Scout,
in Snyder, Texas. He has served as
an Explorer Post Advisor, an Executive Board
Member with the Concho Valley Council and
Chairman of Trustees.
Activity in our community
is a hallmark of his leadership, serving
as President of the Southwest Texas Cattle
Raisers Association and as Chairman of the
Texas State Bank of San Angelo, Assistant
Attorney General of Texas, member of
the Texas Constitutional Revision Committee,
Vice President of the State Bar of Texas,
member of the State Board of Corrections,
President of the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce,
President and Life Trustee of the University
of Texas Law School Foundation, Chairman
of the Board of Trustees for Angelo Community
Hospital, President of the Mohair Council
of America, Trustee for the San Angelo Health
Foundation and member of the Development
Board of the University of Texas.

Linda
Schreiber Linda's leadership roles
in Scouting include, service as a member
of the Troop Committee, Assistant Scoutmaster
of Troop 255, Business Manager at Camp Sol
Mayer, Amistad District Roundtable, Commissioner,
District Camporee Committee Member, District
Training Team. Linda is an energetic
person, devoted to the welfare of young
people, both in Scouting as well as her
community. A teacher at Sacred Heart
School in Del Rio, Linda is active in all
school activities and as a volunteer Emergency
Technician. Involved with her Church,
Linda is an Eucharistic Minister, Lector
and volunteers with the youth group at Sacred
Heart Catholic Church. Linda's devotion
to the Scouting program has resulted in
a strong, growing program in Amistad District.

Eagle
Scout, James L. Powell As a
Boy Scout in Troop 7, here in San Angelo,
Jimmie attained the Eagle Rank in 1946.
A 28 year veteran of our Executive
Board, he has served as our Council Friends
of Scouting Campaign Chairman and has chaired
Council projects. A community leader,
Jimmie serves on the Board of several Banks
and corporations, including Texas Commerce
Bancshares, Texas Commerce Bank, Crockett
County National Bank, and First National
Bank, Mertzon. He has served as President
of the Texas sheep and Goat Raiser's Association,
the National Wool Growers Association, the
American Cattlemen's Association and Texas
Southwestern Cattle Raiser's Association.
He is on the Board of Regents of the
Texas state University System, serving as
it's chairman in 1981 and 1982 and has served
on the National U.S.D.A. Advisory Committee.
Jimmie has been recognize for his
outstanding leadership in agriculture, receiving
the Man of the Year in Texas Agriculture
Award in 1978.
