Scout Show Cars Bring Winning Values of Scouting Message to Local Events
The Scout show cars are nonracing prototypes of a NASCAR race car provided by the Washington Erving Motorsports racing team. The team is led by two former Scouts, NBA star Julius "Dr. J" Erving and NFL great Joe Washington. The 1999 NASCAR Busch Series season marked the second racing season for the Lexington, North Carolina-based team which features Busch Series driver Tony Roper behind the wheel of the Dr Pepper No. 50 Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
In their off time, team members work closely with the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) to promote the values of Scouting programs with the Scout show cars. You can see a Scout show car on (date) at (location, event).
In 1999, the Washington Erving Motorsports team sent the Scout show car to more than 40 events around the country. Toward the end of the year, a second Scout show car was created and put into the rotation to travel the country promoting Scouting.
"The introduction of the second Scout show car allows us to attend more events around the country, putting smiles on many more young faces and taking Scouting's message out into the public eye in more American communities," said Neal Taft, Washington Erving Motorsports team manager.
Washington Erving Motorsports team representatives accompanying the show cars share the BSA's "Strong Values, Strong Leaders--Character Counts" message at events such as camporees, Scout fairs, mall shows, car shows, and major local racing/sporting events.
